![]() In the end, however, the customizable modules were deemed impractical and the ships were delivered with few weapons and no capability to detect mines or submarines. In short, they were warships designed to face the asymmetrical threats of the 21st century. Littoral combat ships were originally conceived as part of a radical concept of operations: fast and customizable combatants that could operate in near-shore environments and meet a range of missions from minesweeping to anti-submarine warfare. How can the Navy redeem itself with the new guided-missile frigate class, or FFG(X), which seeks to fill the hole of small surface combatants left by the fledgling littoral combat ship? By selecting the Italian-designed FREMM frigate, the Navy has already taken a positive step. The Coronado, along with the other first three littoral combat ships, have proven so disastrous that the Navy announced their early decommissioning next year. On one occasion our vessel’s propulsion lost all power in the middle of San Diego Bay and we were saved from grounding in the city’s downtown only by an emergency anchorage. As the navigator of the USS Coronado from 2018 to 2020, I spent much of my time struggling with the ship’s many shortcomings. Indeed, the program has largely been dismissed by insiders, and even by its own sailors, as a $30 billion failure. “Let’s Change Something” and “Little Circus Show” were common and among the more polite. However, as its newest class of warships begins construction and as the Navy continues to formulate its training and crewing structures, it should take stock in the lessons learned from its ongoing struggle with the littoral combat ship.ĭuring my nearly three-year tenure in the program, I heard a range of derisive substitutes for the littoral combat ship acronym, LCS. Navy selected a variant of the Italian-made European multi-purpose frigate to revitalize its stock of surface combatants, which, given the ship’s design is already in use by NATO navies, is a promising sign. As the former navigator of the USS Coronado, the second littoral combat ship of the Independence-class, I experienced firsthand how these ill-conceived vessels impacted sailors. Navy’s littoral combat ships have been plagued by cost overruns, frequent breakdowns, and an ever-changing mission set. Since their inception over a decade ago, the U.S.

Watching this movie is only the first step the rest is on us citizens, but taking that first step is vital. By going after both sides and providing crucial context to how the country has wound up here, Smick lays the foundation for a bridge to help heal. Stars And Rife hones in on the seemingly impossible to navigate gulf that divides citizens of the United States of America. Despite the seriousness of the topics at hand, the pacing is incredibly swift, moving through interviews, animated moments, and news/ archive footage with ease. They also add to what can only be described as the movie’s zippy pacing. The documentary is about some weighty subjects, but these segments offer a pleasant respite with some goofy levity. Smick fills all the necessary exposition (there is a lot of complicated machinery at play) with helpful animatics hosted by a most dapper cat. His interview is interesting as it not only proves that there is a way to reevaluate one’s decisions and thinking, but also adds in a personal story that is a microcosm of the overall point of Stars And Strife. ![]() But, once he started college and met people who challenged his thinking, Derek began to change, eventually renouncing and beginning to make amends for his hateful rhetoric. Due to his upbringing, Derek adopted a white nationalist from a very young age. The most interesting interview is with Derek Black, son of Don Black – the creator of Stormfront. The answer is far more complicated and frustrating than one would care to imagine. He is much more interested in the underlying causes of why this person feels the government has let them down. Throughout this, Smick does not vilify one side or the other. military and civilian personnel and their families living off base who are facing blackouts. By the end of his speech, he built a bridge between their two ideologies, thus sparking a proper debate between both sides. Naval Air Station Sigonella officials are offering emergency housing to U.S. ![]() Hawk Newsome, the co-founder of the NY chapter of Black Lives Matter, describes how he was able to get on stage and speak at a pro-Trump rally. Now, Stars And Strife may sound like a one aisle ticket all the way, but Smick casts a wide net and implicates both parties. He interviews a plethora of (former) politicians, experts, and activists to help form an overview of the history of the United States and evaluate why there seems to be so much more civil unrest and less compromise than ever before. With this documentary, Smick hopes to explore the root cause of how this extreme partisanship came to be and discover a way out, if possible. The order of the stars and stripes changed in 1912, and in 1959 the arrangement was confirmed to show the stars in nine rows staggered horizontally and eleven rows staggered vertically.Stars And Strife came about because writer-director David Smick became frustrated with how nasty politics had become. The amount of stars and stripes on the American flag has changed over the years, with the original flag displaying 15 stripes and 15 starts in 1795. In 1969, possibly the most famous placement of the flag outside of the US was in space when Neil Armstrong placed it on the moon. ![]() In 1909, the flag was placed at the North Pole by Robert Peary, years after in 1963, Barry Bishop put it on top of Mount Everest. ![]() Over the years, the American flag has been placed in a number of different areas outside of the US. The red symbolises hardiness and valour, white symbolises purity and innocence, and blue represents vigilance, perseverance and justice. According to the site, the colours of the flag are also symbolic. With 13 horizontal stripes representing the original 13 Colonies, and the stars representing the 50 states, it’s symbolic of the country. Decoding the racial discourses that have distorted standard histories of rock music, Jack Hamilton underscores how ideas of “authenticity” have blinded us to rock’s inextricably interracial artistic enterprise.Īccording to the standard storyline, the authentic white musician was guided by an individual creative vision, whereas black musicians were deemed authentic only when they stayed true to black tradition. In the 1960s, however, rock and roll gave way to rock: a new musical ideal regarded as more serious, more artistic-and the province of white musicians. Rooted in rhythm-and-blues pioneered by black musicians, 1950s rock and roll was racially inclusive and attracted listeners and performers across the color line. Why did rock and roll become “white”? Just around Midnight reveals the interplay of popular music and racial thought that was responsible for this shift within the music industry and in the minds of fans. Yet a mere ten years earlier, Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley had stood among the most influential rock and roll performers. Listen to a Spotify playlist of songs and artists Jack Hamilton considers in Just around Midnight:īy the time Jimi Hendrix died in 1970, the idea of a black man playing lead guitar in a rock band seemed exotic. ![]() ![]() We shouldn’t feel hate, we should feel pity. It doesn’t matter which chicken it currently is – it doesn’t have long left of its miserable life to live anyway. It’s the latest in a long line of sad and mistreated chickens that Mayor Goodway’s brain has assimilated to be ‘Chickoletta’. ![]() So, you see, you may hate ‘that chicken’, but it’s not actually one chicken. She could swan around Adventure Bay pretending to open benches, parks and the like, and at the same time be a figurehead that could detract all the silly little problems of the town away from Ryder, giving him more time to spend on his hobbies, such as animations and dog training… Everyone knows that Mayors do nothing, add nothing, and therefore also offer no immediate danger of any sort. He decided the easiest way to deal with it was to give Goodway a token job or position, so he made her ‘Mayor’. He could have dealt with her too of course, but he did have an affection for her that, not only irritated him, but also just wouldn’t let him do it. ![]() On the death of his mother Ryder really didn’t want to have to deal with the deranged ‘auntie’ that had lived in the tower with them. This affliction would manifest itself by her replacing the chicken with a new one whenever Chickoletta ‘got sick and had to rest’, which was actually quite frequent. The distraught Goodway just could not cope with this, and in her obsession began to believe that Chickoletta was still alive, and would never die. Chickens, however, don’t live all that long, especially when kept in a bag and only periodically fed on a diet of nothing but sweetcorn, so ‘Chickoletta’ quickly died. She grew such an attachment to one chicken in particular that she used to carry it around with her everywhere in a bag. In fact, the chickens were her only company for many, many years. Named ‘Goodway’, she was kept inside for pretty much most of her childhood, only allowed outside to tend to the allotments and to look after the chickens. Instead she kept it herself, and brought it up in the tower. She couldn’t be labelled a baby-murderer, that’s the kind of thing that causes rebellions. She disappeared soon afterwards, obviously, but Ryder’s mother kept the baby. The lady claimed to have never even met a black guy before, but the evidence was there for all to see. When the town was run by Ryder’s mother (before he was born, and long before he murdered her of course) one of the women of the town had a baby that caused her some issues. There wasn’t a lot of diversity in Adventure Bay, and that was not overly surprising as the population was heavily controlled, using forced marriage and other eugenic systems. She’s born and bred in Adventure Bay, and has never left the area, hence why she’s completely bat-shit crazy. I have been somewhat berated for not doing enough with her character, but I think if you knew a bit of her background, you’d understand a bit more… It seems to me that there is a lot of hatred for Chickoletta around. This was my response, it also explains a bit about Mayor Goodway too: I wrote a really stupid and silly story about what really 'goes on' in Adventure Bay (I was bored one lunchtime), but I got a lot of grief for not doing anything nasty to Chickoletta in it. ![]() Please contact us if you cannot properly experience this site. Which brings up what criteria to use for determining the amp to replace the Pathfinder 15R. Keep us posted and let us know how you go. Even accounting for inflation (the 15R has been discontinued for 6-1/2 years), the Mini Super Beetle is priced significantly higher. If not, buy from someplace like Sweetwater or GC that will allow you to return and/or exchange if you want. This page is dedicated to the owners and admirers of the Vox AC15 guitar amp. They’re not quite as much as a tube amp as the Fenders, but they still use some tube technology and some can be switched from various wattages, allowing you to get good tones at very low volume.Īs always, try before you buy if possible. The other thing I'd suggest is the Vox Valvetronix line. From what I've read, the X2 has solved some of the occasional bugs found in some XD's. I have the XD in that color combo it's great. They both sound great, have a large vocabulary of tones and effects onboard, and both can be had in a cool cream tolex/oxblood grill. I like the Fender Super Champ XD or the newer model, the X2. The big "what if" would have been Vox releasing that same preamp as a 30 or 40-watt 10" speaker, or even a 12" version.Forgive me if I missed some of your info, but.Īre you planning on gigging with this amp? If so, you'll need something that can cut through at least small level gigs and still be able to use as a practice amp at home without blowing the roof off. It used to pop fuses all the time, and the floorswitch was shit, but apart from that it. Obviously, I wouldn't have bought an AC10C1 if I didn't think it could offer something above and beyond what the Pathfinder 15 already does. I will absolutely buy a second one if I happen across a used one in good condition someday. It seems to be able to offer the clean headroom you need to work with pedals, while also sounding "like a tube amp" all over the gain knob. I actually got the new AC10C1 in the past year, and while that's arguably a "better" Vox tone, it wouldn't exaggeration to say the Pathfinder is more versatile. The Pathfinder is an excellent pedal platform, but what really makes it special is tube-like "just a little dirty" saturation that solid state preamp manages to achieve. Vintage 1965 VOX Pathfinder V1 Tube Guitar Amplifier Amp MULLARD. Vox cleans aren't really about a booming low end anyway. Vox Pathfinder 15R Guitar Amplifier Stripe Insert. There are a lot of a guitar tones that you would struggle to make with an 8" speaker, but the Vox clean tone isn't one of them, in my opinion. So why hack it up if you can just plug it into a larger speaker? The Pathfinder sounds GREAT used in this way, and can get surprisingly loud with clean headroom. One of the reasons I left the 8" speaker in there is that the rear of the amp has connections both for an 8-ohm cabinet and for a line level output (which could be fed into the front of another amp or a power amp input of an FX loop). Some people have done this mod and swear by the results, but I've left mine stock because this is an out-of-production amp that quite happy with "as is" That amp disappeared shortly after the Pathfinder 15R was introduced. This amp was an updated version of the Pathfinder without reverb that was originally introduced by Vox in 1999. ![]() ![]() The cabinet for the Pathfinder 15 isn't really that compact - it's actually large enough to house some 10" speakers (if you modify the baffle). The Pathfinder 15R was a small solid state 1x8' 15 watt combo amp that was introduced by Vox in 2000.The blue Vox Bulldog that comes with it is actually a pretty good match.provided you aren't trying to crank the thing beyond its capabilities. Features: 8 Sound: 7.8 Reliability & Durability: 7.3 Overall Impression: 8. If you're not bothered by the idea of an 8" speaker (or appreciate the amp's portability and performance at bedroom levels), there isn't really a great 8" replacement that will significantly improve the amp.So that's a valid opinion one can have, and if you want something bigger, buy a larger amp. It will invariably sound "small" or "boxy" to them. I can't tell you that you're "wrong", because some people will never be happy with an 8" speaker.Click to expand. The 8" speaker is always the most divisive aspect of the Pathfinder 15/R, but in debating this endlessly, I've arrived at several conclusions: |
